The dictionary definition of twitter is “a short burst of inconsequential information.” A perfect name, said @Jack [co-founder] because “that’s exactly what the product was.”

As the micro-blogging site Twitter turns 5 years old, it's now more popular than ever thanks to heavy media promotion, with over 200 million users. Like other advances in social networking technology, it's convenience and utility can't be denied, especially when they're confirmed by millions of users. However, its effects can be examined.

When examing any topic, context is important. Most people know about financial, corporate and government corruption that threatens our future. But, fewer know how groups work to standardize cultures worldwide as part of a push for global control. Unless people understand this, it's hard to resist, but millions do, so it's not hard to.

Globally, the mass media is now promoting Twitter as a valuable tool for activists to resist tyrannical governments. Since they usually ignore activist efforts, this might be the first time they've done anything like this in history. A quick search of the word "Twitter" on Google News reveals 61,700 stories as of this writing. Twitter is "hot".

What exactly do people do on Twitter? They "tweet" (like birds) links to info or ideas, in 140 characters or less, to try to satisfy and increase the number of "followers" they have. Since it's hard to explain much in 140 characters or less, most info shared has to reference a mainstream understanding of the world most people are familiar with.

Most activists have issues with the mainstream media, but the most successful activists on Twitter will probably have to reference the mainstream media to make sure their (preferably) growing list of followers will understand them quickly in 140 characters or less. Therefore, activists who rely on Twitter get indirectly controlled.

Twitter users in general are forced to conform to mainstream views of the world to communicate this quickly. Many won't bother thinking of many thoughts to add since there isn't room to share them. Over time, many users will likely stop coming up with own thoughts. This can play into the hands of people in power working to control us.

Phonetically, the root word of Twitter is "twit", which means "a mentally deficient or self-defeating person" (Wikipedia). So: if people in power are behind promoting this, they're probably having a good laugh. Propaganda also works through repetition, so lazily repeating or "re-tweeting" what we're all sold makes it more effective than ever.

Today, we have more access to information than at any time in history. Yet, we have less political control than at any time in history. This wasn't supposed to happen. So, it may not be an accident. Stories and studies on how social networking tools reduce our attention spans might help explain things. If we have the patience to read them.

Global "new age" influenced cultures suggest we try to "keep it happy" as much as possible, or when mentioning something bad, it's polite to quickly mention something good to take the edge off. When using Twitter, there's little room to explain anything, so complex issues get over-simplified or ignored as it gets tougher to deal with them.

Should you, faithful reader, be hardy enough to make it this far, you'll note the steady stream of critical analysis about Twitter. The social pressure to say something good about topics we criticize is meant to neutralize the impact of criticism so it's never dealt with. Twitter helps do that quickly until we just tweet random happy thoughts.

Our happiness is at stake and affected by all our actions, including the sense of fulfillment (or lack) we get from Twitter or anything else. Unwittingly destroying our ability to communicate can affect our confidence, relationships and everything else, so even if something is fashionable, we should see whether or not it's valuable too.

Dozens of allusions to mind control can be made about Twitter, from the bastardized cliches, isolating narcissim, bland complaints or updates, #hashtags creating silly trending topics and more. There's no reason to discuss them for their own sake, but there is when it comes to dealing with our corrupt and threatening political systems.

Politicians who are corrupt and want to be left unaccountable would surely prefer people spend 5 hours "Twitting" (tweeting) instead of taking 5 minutes to send them a well-written email they'd need to respond to, or talking to their neighbours about complex issues until everyone can understand them and they ask for better policies.

Tautological arguments that are true by definition, like "people have to use Twitter because everyone uses Twitter", often ignore the challenges and desired outcomes of our modern age. While it may be a bad idea to ignore it, it may be an worse idea to rely on Twitter to affect political change because the mass media says it will work.

Big central banks, whose owners control the world's money-supply and indirectly control the world, including many revolutions meant to occur at this time, are behind the push for global control that should be resisted locally everywhere. While Twitter may help, since it's heavily promoted, it's probably not meant to. What can we do?

Perhaps if more people resist the urge to use Twitter until it changes how they think, or stops them from thinking of much to say, its effects can be mitigated. Locally, if people use it to set up offline meetings where they discuss important topics in depth and come up with solutions, it can be effective. This happens. But not often enough.

Below is a documentary called "Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement" by Alex Jones, an independent media magnate who researches the plans of the global elite. He's co-signed by many experts smarter than most and has been publicly right on political issues for over 15 years. Can Twitter help us defeat a new "global" empire?

Also below is a link to articles on the effects of social networking tools to help us deal with them. Ultimately, we have to use technology to communicate and to empower people into taking action, so that should be the focus. But, it may help to understand why certain tools are more promoted than others and to understand the effects too.

Finally, all is not lost with every humble tweet we launch into cyberspace. As long as people can see and recognize the problems with the platform when dealing with our serious political issues, they can make sure we transcend them. As celebrations of Twitter turning 5 years old dominate the mass media, let's make sure we know why.

... As I also mentioned yesterday, in some of the emails, HBGary people are talking about creating "personas", what we would call sockpuppets. This is not new. PR firms have been using fake "people" to promote products and other things for a while now, both online and even in bars and coffee houses.

But for a defense contractor with ties to the federal government, Hunton & Williams, DOD, NSA, and the CIA - whose enemies are labor unions, progressive organizations, journalists, and progressive bloggers, a persona apparently goes far beyond creating a mere sockpuppet.

UPDATE: From another email, I found a government solicitation for this "Persona Management Software".

This confirms that in fact, the US Gov. is attempting to use this kind of technology. But it appears from the solicitation it is contracted for use in foreign theaters like Afghanistan and Iraq. I can't imagine why this is posted on an open site. And whenthis was discovered by a couple of HBGary staffers, they weren't too happy about it either:

The first email just had the title, "WTF Dude?"

The response email said, "This is posted on open source. Are you fucking serious?"

Aw man, as of 11:24 pm on Monday, March 14, 2011, mah Twitter account is all fuggidy-fugged up. It looks all squirrely.

You can see it at - http://twitter.com/MayorVij - for yourself. You can't read any Twits. Hardly any are visible. This is sucky.

Clicking the RSS feed reveals they're still up there, but not many people are likely to do that. It's really hard to read right now.

This is what I hate about these online tools. Almost nobody believes it could be federal foul play either. It just sucks 2 be me.

However, I lost 3 YouTube accounts. The first for a few copyright clips (etc.) The others for videos I mostly shot in Toronto. (?)

R.I.P. YouTube.com/ BlackKrishna, CrackKrishna and MPVij. You are still missed. I had millions of hits on those vids. Oh well.

Plus, my NowPublic.com page where I posted radio shows was taken after I argued with people attacking me on * my * page.

And, my Facebook account for my stage-name "Black Krishna" was taken away while organizing SPP protest campaigns in 2008.

Bah, what can you do? I guess nothing's guaranteed and they do own the means of communication. But this is still sucky-ucky-ucky.

Of course, every single time could be a coincidence. Either way, it's a reminder that offline communications are still really important.

We can see Twitter is being heavily promoted by our corporate media, even bizarrely as an activist tool for resistance when they usually ignore activists. Social networking is now really popular, but that's probably because it's not as effective as normal conversations in improving communication. In fact, the opposite may be true.

People should be careful. See evidence below on how Twitter and social networking tools affect our ability to communicate and make it tougher to want to talk to each other in the normal ways we used to. This destroys confidence in our ability to talk, reduces the number of words we can remember and use and more. And fast.

Global standardization of thought is part of "globalization" plans by central bankers at the top who control currency, credit and countries to make us easier to control. Using the media to encourage people to blurt random ego-syntonic feelings, or riff on mostly mainstream topics in 140 characters or less, may be part of the plan.

Online corporate and government surveillance isn't just to violate our privacy. It's to collect huge amounts of data to push trends and brainwash us easier. We can add the fact that governments are openly hiring armies of "sockpuppets" or fake online personas to talk to us in blurts and broken-english and control what we say.

When people need to learn about, understand and defend their families against the "new world order" being created by super-rich people working for global governance, the less we learn to speak about things, the harder it is to explain, talk about and do something about. This is probably accidental, so we should figure out what to do.

Social networking is what people are into, so it makes sense to do it, except to be careful how often. Our relationships get threatened by our inability to communicate, or lack of a desire to, which can leave us feeling isolated. Social networking can also lead to social constipation as we struggle to express our unique selves less.

Fortunately, changes to our cultures are happening so fast it's impossible to avoid noticing them, especially adults who've been around long enough to see many. As long as we take time offline to discuss them in detail with people where we live, we can work together to get our politicians and governments to help us handle them.

New York Times: Antisocial Networking?

"HEY, you’re a dork," said the girl to the boy with a smile. "Just wanted you to know."

"Just kidding," said the girl with another smile. "You’re only slightly dorky, but other than that, you’re pretty normal — sometimes."

They both laughed.

It was a pretty typical pre-teen exchange, one familiar through the generations. Except this one had a distinctly 2010 twist. It was conducted on Facebook. The smiles were colons with brackets. The laughs were typed ha ha’s. "O.K." was just "K" and "See you" was rendered as "c ya."

Children used to actually talk to their friends.

That is the claim of psychologists who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking them for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the user’s IQ.

BBC News: Online networking 'harms health'

Dr Aric Sigman says websites such as Facebook set out to enrich social lives, but end up keeping people apart.

Dr Sigman makes his warning in Biologist, the journal of the Institute of Biology.

A lack of "real" social networking, involving personal interaction, may have biological effects, he suggests.

He also says that evidence suggests that a lack of face-to-face networking could alter the way genes work, upset immune responses, hormone levels, the function of arteries, and influence mental performance.

This, he claims, could increase the risk of health problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease, and dementia.

New York Times: The Health Effects of Social Networking

Lady Greenfield (she’s a neuroscientist and a baroness) told The Daily Mail:

"My fear is that these technologies are infantilizing the brain into the state of small children who are attracted by buzzing noises and bright lights, who have a small attention span and who live for the moment."

These remarks echo concerns that Lady Greenfield expressed earlier this month in a debate in the House of Lords, in which she said that social networking, as well as computer games, might be particularly harmful to children, and could be behind the observed rise in cases of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder:

Los Angeles Times: Women who post lots of photos of themselves on Facebook value appearance, need attention, study finds

A study on how people use social networking websites such as Facebook confirms what many of us suspected. Women who post loads of photos of themselves on their sites are conveying some strong personal characteristics, according to new research. These women are more likely to base their self-worth on appearance and use social networking to compete for attention.

The study involved 311 men and women with an average age of 23. In order to better understand aspects of social networking behavior, the researchers looked at the amount of time subjects spent managing profiles, the number of photos they shared, the size of their online networks and how promiscuous they were in terms of "friending" behavior. The participants completed a questionnaire designed to measure self worth and were asked about their typical behaviors on Facebook.

Computer World: Army of fake social media friends to promote propaganda

It's recently been revealed that the U.S. government contracted HBGary Federal for the development of software which could create multiple fake social media profiles to manipulate and sway public opinion on controversial issues by promoting propaganda. It could also be used as surveillance to find public opinions with points of view the powers-that-be didn't like. It could then potentially have their "fake" people run smear campaigns against those "real" people. As disturbing as this is, it's not really new for U.S. intelligence or private intelligence firms to do the dirty work behind closed doors.

According to an embedded MS Word document found in one of the HBGary emails, it involves creating an army of sockpuppets, with sophisticated "persona management" software that allows a small team of only a few people to appear to be many, while keeping the personas from accidentally cross-contaminating each other. Then, to top it off, the team can actually automate some functions so one persona can appear to be an entire Brooks Brothers riot online.

This confirms that in fact, the US Gov. is attempting to use this kind of technology. But it appears from the solicitation it is contracted for use in foreign theaters like Afghanistan and Iraq. I can't imagine why this is posted on an open site. And whenthis was discovered by a couple of HBGary staffers, they weren't too happy about it either:
